A long history…
We’re all about chicken, really, really good PERI-PERI chicken to be exact!
PERI-PERI is our heart and soul. It began centuries ago, when the Portuguese explorers set sail for the East of Africa. It was there that they were introduced to the African Bird’s Eye Chilies, they were enchanted by its flavor they added a squeeze of lemon and a kick of garlic and turned the chilies into the well- known PERI-PERI sauce.
This magic ingredient stayed hidden for centuries between the local Portuguese community in Africa until 1987 when two men went for lunch in a HUMBLE Portuguese eatery ,as there meal draw to the close they knew they had tasted something magical, a test that had to be shared with the rest of the world.. and they did…They did it very very well… Nandos was then introduced in Africa..
In 1998 a young man left Algeria to discover the world , he visited many countries in Europe until settling in the UK, the two men of South Africa left Africa to introduce Nandos to the world, their journey began in the UK.. ..And so UK was where our story began.. Our founder started working for Nando’s, it was then a small private business with only 8 restaurant, He shared the passion, the vision and love of the PERI-PERI magic,,, every day passes by the love of this magical ingredient grow more and more in him..
He went on to become a business partner in Nando’s , helping them introduce Peri-Peri to the southwest of England including Bristol, Cardiff, Plymouth, Exeter, bath…
This is magical, “he always thought”
“THIS PERI-PERI IS DISTINDED TO MAKE ANOTHER JOURNY..THE MOST IMPORTANT JOURNY OF THEM ALL.. FROM EUROPE BACK TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN…BACK TO AFRICA”.
and so he did with SPICY CHICKEN opening in October 2016 filled with vibrant colors, incredible patterns and interesting mixes of old and new, this new EURO-African design pays homage to our roots in a fresh, modern and exciting way..
We’ve got two favourite stories from our history and love sharing them with our people. Story of our logo and the Legendary Peri-Peri sauce… Enjoy the read!
According to the legend, silver had been stolen from a landowner in Barcelos, and the inhabitants of that city were looking for the criminal who had committed the crime. One day, a man from neighboring Galicia turned up and became suspect, despite his pleas of innocence. The Galician swore that he was merely passing through Barcelos on a Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela to complete a promise.
Nevertheless, the authorities arrested the Galician and condemned him to hang. The man asked them to take him in front of the judge who had condemned him. The authorities honored his request and took him to the house of the magistrate, who was holding a banquet with some friends. Affirming his innocence, the Galician pointed to a roasted cock on top of the banquet table and exclaimed, “It is as certain that I am innocent as it is certain that this rooster will crow when they hang me.” The judge pushed aside his plate because he decided to not eat the rooster. But still, the judge ignored the Galician’s appeal.
However, while the pilgrim was being hanged, the roasted rooster stood up on the table and crowed as the Galician predicted. Understanding his error, the judge ran to the gallows, only to discover that the Galician had been saved from hanging thanks to a poorly made knot in the rope. The man was immediately freed and sent off in peace
story started centuries ago, when the Portuguese explorers set sail for the East. The winds of Africa called them ashore and it was there that they were introduced to the African Bird’s Eye Chilli – more commonly known as PERi-PERi. A spice like no other, they used it to create a unique PERi-PERi sauce that put fire in their bellies and ignited passion in their souls.
